February 2009: Herb garden
To pick up where I left off with the last post, I was relocating some major earth from one of the beds to improve our drainage/irrigation "system", so I moved it to the area in front of our living room windows to make way for an herb garden. Here's what it was at the outset (back in the summer of 2008):
Here's what it looked like in transition:

And voila, here it is after I had moved all the black clay from our bed and topped it w/ about an inch or so of compost from the nursery. Good stuff. There were about 5-10 herbs already in the bed, and I had to work around those. But the most exciting part were the 50-60 new plants that I bought to add. Some of those are varieties of the same type of herb, so I'd say I've got about 15-20 different types of herbs in there now. This is great.
I admit that the herb garden is a bit indulgent. (I haven't shared with anyone the price tab for 60 herb plants, and I see no need to.) Yet, I've always expected a rampant herb garden to be a perk of homeownership, so my buyer's remorse is almost nonexistant. More importantly, I'm convinced that herbs are something that very few people have an excuse to buy at the store. For the price of one package of fresh herbs, you can buy an entire plant, and as long as you have a yard or space for pots and enough sun for them to grow (which isn't really a lot), they're really low maintenance (as a rule of thumb).
