September 2008: Still a little too hot.
This isn't scientific or official, but our September temperatures are still well into the nineties, and it's not at all unusual to have some days that surpass the three-digit mark. Nonetheless, our planting calendar has a lot of the transplants, and virtually all of the seeds, in the ground by September. Here's a sample . . .
This is a row of turnips and/or rutabagas that I planted as seeds.
These were the beginnings of a few kale plants (red and "blue"), and one or two cabbages, that I had begun as seed(ling)s in transplant containers and then transferred to the garden bed . . .
And a couple solitary peas emerged from seed.
Two squashes I bought as transplants; you can see how hard the afternoon sun is on them.
